Data buoy for the Demowfloat project developed for EDP Inovação
25-08-2014
Lindley has supplied and installed, through its represented partner AXYS Technologies, an oceanographic buoy as part of the Demowfloat project developed by EDP Inovação. AXYS Technologies, a specialist in the design and manufacturing of environmental data acquisition systems, was chosen by EDP Inovação to design a floating platform with wind speed and intensity measurement systems at the elevation level of conventional wind turbines.
The Demowfloat project consists of a consortium of twelve technological entities from five countries with the aim of testing and monitoring the long-term performance of the WindFloat® floating wind turbine, installed off the coast of Póvoa de Varzim in Portugal, approximately 4 nautical miles from the shore at a depth of 50 meters. The objective is to analyze the harnessing of offshore wind energy and its conversion into electrical power. This experimental turbine is located in a protected area restricted to navigation and is marked with marine lights provided by Lindley. The WindSentinel® oceanographic buoy, recently installed by Lindley, is an integral part of this project with the goal of measuring and profiling wind characteristics at the elevation level of wind turbines.
This process is integrated into the execution of test and measurement campaigns in pilot and experimental areas to study the feasibility of future offshore wind farm installations. For this purpose, the floating platform was equipped with a Vindicator® III LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) system, a laser anemometer designed to accurately measure wind speed, direction, and turbulence along the vertical plane. The WindSentinel® buoy is located off the coast of Viana do Castelo, approximately eight nautical miles from the shore as part of the first phase of the project, and it is expected to be repositioned in a second campaign at a yet-to-be-determined location. Data collected from these campaigns will significantly enhance the capacity to develop offshore wind resources in Portugal. Lindley will also be responsible for monitoring and maintaining the equipment, as well as all its components, during the data collection period, ensuring the desired quality levels specified by EDP Inovação.
