New Naval Base in Soyo, Angola
12-09-2023
The Government of Angola, through the Ministry of National Defense and Veterans of the Homeland, has constructed the new Naval Base in Soyo at the entrance of the Soyo Channel, near the mouth of the Congo River. The base was inaugurated on July 10th by the President of Angola, João Lourenço. The primary objective of this base is to provide maritime security to the Northern Region of Angola. Lindley was subcontracted by the construction company Mota-Engil to supply and supervise the installation of floating pontoons and marine aids to navigation.
Lindley was responsible for the floating infrastructure, which includes a 115-meter concrete floating pontoon with two access walkways. Additionally, it includes accessories like pedestals and safety ladders. This floating infrastructure, anchored by piles, belongs to continuous flotation pontoon (PFC) model, with a width of 4 meters and a height of 1 meter. It is suitable for accommodating small-sized boats and patrol vessels.
Regarding marine aids to navigation, Lindley provided a marking system for the channel, consisting of 15 Balizamar EVO B1600S buoys, each equipped with GPS and satellite monitoring marine lanterns. The system also includes four onshore beacons with their respective lanterns. Notably, one of the towers supports a powerful three-cannon sector lantern mounted on a 12-meter-high tower, ensuring the initial access to the channel.
The construction of the base began in March 2021, and during these years, various works were carried out, including dredging, construction of floating infrastructure (pontoons, a landing ramp, and a platform for the travelift, among others), as well as operational and command buildings, administrative service areas, water reservoirs, accommodations for sailors and higher-ranking officers, and other facilities.
